“A Step-by-Step Guide: How to Grow Lemon Coral Sedum for Stunning Garden Displays”

Are you looking to add a pop of color and unique texture to your garden? Look no further than lemon coral sedum!

This low-growing succulent is known for its vibrant chartreuse foliage that resembles coral, making it a stunning addition to any garden or container. If you’re interested in learning how to grow lemon coral sedum successfully, you’re in the right place.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of planting and caring for lemon coral sedum for beautiful garden displays.

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

Lemon coral sedum thrives in full sun to light shade, so it’s important to choose a location in your garden that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

In hotter areas, it is said to give it a bit of afternoon shade. I have some planted under a garden bench and it loves it there.

The plant also prefers well-draining soil, so make sure the planting area has good drainage. If you have heavy clay soil, consider amending it with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Plants grown in overly rich soils or in too much shade will produce weak, floppy growth.

I plan on adding this sedum to my gravel garden this season, more on that in another post!

Step 2: Planting Lemon Coral Sedum

Once you’ve chosen the right location, it’s time to plant your lemon coral sedum. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball of your sedum.
  2. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with the amended soil, gently tamping it down around the plant.
  3. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help establish the roots.

Step 3: Care Tips for Lemon Coral Sedum

To ensure that your lemon coral sedum thrives, follow these care tips:

  1. Watering: Lemon coral sedum is drought-tolerant and prefers to be kept on the drier side.

Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions.

Overwatering can lead to root rot, so be careful not to let the plant sit in waterlogged soil.
  2. Fertilizing: Lemon coral sedum does not require much fertilization. You can apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer once in the spring, but be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to leggy growth. See this post on why I avoid fertilizing and what I do instead!
  3. Pruning: Lemon coral sedum does not require much pruning.

However, you can pinch back the tips of the plant to encourage bushier growth and prevent it from becoming too leggy.

  4. Winter Care: Lemon coral sedum is semi-evergreen and can tolerate light frost.

In my area it dies back but returns each summer.

However, in colder climates, it’s best to provide some protection, such as covering the plant with a blanket or moving it to a sheltered spot during the winter months.

This plant is hardy in zones 7 – 11 but can drown in very wet winters so be sure it is in very free-draining soil!

Step 4: Propagation

One of the great things about lemon coral sedum is that it’s easy to propagate. You can propagate it through stem cuttings or by dividing the plant. Here’s how:

  1. Stem cuttings: Select a healthy stem from your lemon coral sedum and cut it just below a node (where the leaves attach to the stem).

Remove the lower leaves and dip the cut end in rooting hormone.

Plant the cutting in well-draining soil and keep it lightly moist until it roots, which usually takes a few weeks.

I like to use horticultural sand.
  2. Division: In the spring or fall, you can dig up your mature lemon coral sedum and gently separate the clumps into smaller sections.

Replant the sections in well-draining soil and water them thoroughly.

They should establish quickly and start growing new shoots.

Step 5: Enjoy the Stunning Garden Displays

With proper care and maintenance, your lemon coral sedum will reward you with stunning displays in your garden.

I love how it grows and fills in to form a dense mat of chartreuse foliage that adds a vibrant pop of color to the landscape.

Lemon coral sedum also produces small, star-shaped yellow flowers in the summer, adding to its visual appeal though I prefer to shave them off.

How to Use

You can use lemon coral sedum in various ways to enhance your garden displays. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Groundcover: Due to its low-growing habit and spreading nature, lemon coral sedum makes an excellent groundcover.

Plant it in mass plantings or along the edges of garden beds to create a lush and colorful carpet-like effect.
  2. Rock and gravel gardens: Lemon coral sedum’s succulent foliage and ability to tolerate dry conditions make it a perfect choice for rock gardens.

Plant it in between rocks or on slopes for a stunning and low-maintenance display.
  3. Container gardens: Lemon coral sedum is also well-suited for container gardening.

Plant it in pots or hanging baskets to create a unique and eye-catching arrangement for your patio or balcony.
  4. Mixed plantings: Lemon coral sedum pairs well with other succulents, grasses, and perennials.

Mix it with plants of contrasting colors and textures to create an interesting and dynamic garden display.
