Peony flowers are one of the delights of the late spring, and early summer garden. In early Spring you will find new growth peeking up from the soil indicating peony season is about to begin!

The main reason for cutting back your peony bush is to help next year’s growth be its best. Just like many herbaceous perennials or deciduous shrubs end of season maintenance is key to encouraging healthy growth and beautiful flowers next Spring.

When to Prune Peonies

Autumn Pruning: Using the Frost to Your Advantage

When fall arrives, many gardeners wonder if it’s time to trim their peony plants. Autumn is the right time for pruning, especially after the frost has browned the leaves. This indicates that the nutrients from the leaves have moved to the roots, helping the plant grow next season.

How to prune Peonies in the fall:

– Cut all stems,  and dead foliage down to the base of the plant or ground level with a sharp pair of pruners.

– Remove plant debris from the garden and put them in your compost pile.

Spring Pruning: A Fresh Start

If you prefer to wait until the following spring to prune your peonies, that’s also fine. By spring, the peony foliage has usually dried up, making it easy to clean them up with your fingers.

I have found that some of the larger stems will still need you to use pruners.

I have some of my peonies planted in a bed with many other perennials that become large enough to hide the fading foliage and I can wait until the following early Spring. I prune out the more visible brown foliage as needed.

Steps for spring pruning:

– Cut all dead stems down to the base of the plant.

– Put the cuttings in your compost pile.

Summer Pruning: Addressing Diseases

While peonies are usually pruned in spring or autumn, sometimes summer pruning is necessary, especially if your plants have diseases like botrytis (peony wilt). Quick action can help control these issues and plant health.

I don’t fuss much about powdery mildew, in my garden it comes and it goes, but I have a dryer climate. Some may need to prune off foliage that is suffering from powdery mildew or you can try to prevent it…

For summer pruning:

– Remove any damaged or diseased leaves as soon as you see them.

– DO NOT compost these leaves; throw the diseased foliage in the garbage to prevent the spread of disease.

It is a good idea to deadhead peonies as the beautiful blooms fade or harvest and use as cut flowers. Removing the faded flowers (dead peony blooms) allows the new flower buds to shine.

Understanding Different Types of Peonies

Peonies come in three main types: herbaceous peonies, tree peonies, and Itoh peonies. Each type has unique characteristics and care needs.

Herbaceous Peonies:

These are the most common peonies. They die back to the ground each winter and regrow in the spring. They have large, fragrant flowers and are easy to care for.

Tree Peonies:

Unlike herbaceous peonies, a tree peony will have woody stems that stay above ground year-round. They produce larger flowers and bloom earlier in the season. Pruning should be done carefully in the fall, cutting back any dead or weak wood only.

Itoh Peonies aka Intersectional Peonies:

These are hybrid peonies, a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies. They have the large flowers of tree peonies and the growth habit of herbaceous peonies. Prune them like herbaceous peonies, cutting back to the ground in the fall or spring.
