She Shed Cottage Inside

She Shed Cottage Inside, come visit my sweet little creative cottage.

So you loved my How We Built My She Shed. The requests keep pouring in and I have taken my sweet time in posting the interior because it was in such disarray.

But I forced myself to spend a weekend getting it straightened up and photo worthy.  It took so long because I wanted to make sure all of my supplies were organized in a logical fashion, I want to be able to find them in a snap as I need them.

Now here is my She Shed Cottage Inside.
(this post may contain affiliate links, please see my disclosure page for more info)

I have more Learn to Paint videos and posts to create so having everything in its place is essential to my business.

Keep in mind this space is 12′ x 12′ outside dimensions so take away the wall thickness and you may have 11 feet 4 inches square inside dimensions.

So here we go, I am taking you around the cottage from just inside the French Doors.  We start from the right and pan to the left all the way around.

This is my little painted spattered sink.  Eventually I am going to get some curtain panels made to cover the underneath, I store various things under here like my little Dustbuster Hand Vac, this little gem has been indispensable.

She Shed Studio Cottage Interior, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com (3 of 10) I love being able to look out my windows to the Secret Garden outside.

That is a work in progress for sure but this summer it should be outstanding.   In the photo above you can see the top of my Obelisk Arbor, I am planning on that being covered with some gorgeous blooms.

She Shed Studio Cottage Interior, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com (4 of 10)My armoire is great for storage but it takes up so much space.

I have a feeling it will be finding a new spot in the garage sometime soon as I really do need the space.  The positive side of having it in the garage is it will make me walk for things I need.

I need more exercise so anything that makes me walk a bit is always a good thing.

I am so happy with the new white paint on the walls.

My husband painted it this past Spring/Summer and it makes it so much brighter inside.  There is a spot in the loft that still needs painting but I hope to get to that soon.

The back wall is the only one without windows and is perfect for staging photos of signs, paintings and painted furniture.
My painting workbench  is way too big and will need to be shortened or replaced.   This was a great project to build.

Typically the top is another surface to do my paintings on, but it also is great for packaging and getting small pieces of furniture at a height that I don’t need to stoop to paint on them.

The lower shelf is where I let boards that I have base painted dry.  A shorter workbench will be just as useful and less cumbersome to move around, I will consider putting wheels on the next one.

Now we have made it around to the left side of the studio and more windows, these face the side street.

She Shed Studio Cottage Interior, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com (7 of 10)Though this side is south I don’t get much direct sun in winter, the tall pines and cedar block much of it and I just get dappled sunlight at best.

My Holiday Cactus love it in here, it doesn’t get overly warm like it can in the house. My husband likes the get the house very toasty with the wood stove.

The shelving unit is handy and does not intrude into the space like the armoire does, so I am going to utilize it better and place my most used items in the armoire here so they are at hand and what is in the armoire will be more of the less used items.

With judicious planning I think this will be the best option for making better use of space and leave more open area.  I left enough space behind it to tuck things I don’t necessarily want in full view but they are easy enough to grab out when needed.

Now we have come full circle.  The shelf above the doors is handy for storing my painted glass items safely.

She Shed Studio Cottage Interior, FlowerPatchFarmhouse.com (10 of 10)So there you have it, the interior of my Studio Cottage aka She Shed.

I have a few things in mind for improvements.  The flooring has taken a beating and it has been 10 years so I would like to replace it this summer.  The wood look vinyl flooring is lovely and not terribly expensive.

My husband and I have discussed putting in a bay window on the North side, the side with the painting table and paint cubby shelf.  Even a small one with a window seat can add more room without too much expense.
Since I cannot take down the trees on the South side I would like maybe a skylight to add to the lighting but that is more a dream than a real plan.  We shall see.  It is nice to think about though.
I hope you enjoyed the little tour.

I have been asked how I heat my little cottage.  Here is a link to the actual heater I use, it stays on 24/7 for the winter.  Radiant wall heater
I
t does a great job and if it is super cold I have another little heater that is turned on about an hour before I go in to paint to bring the temp up to a more comfy level.  On average my electric bill goes up about $35 per month to heat my cottage.

So if you had a little cottage she shed like this what would you do inside?

Hi Pamela,it’s with a great pleasure that i watch the she shed.I am intending to start mines this summer, but i would need your help.Your job was well done,as you said some sun light would be good for the inside.Especially well placed in the garden so that you hear the differents sounds like birds, see also the flowers.Continue the good work.

  4. Adorable ! I want to get one like this for a bunkie at IN oNT. my cottage but only want 10 x10 bc of needing permit for this size and want it big enough to house 2 single beds with a little bedside table or dresser in between the beds

  5. Your question is really tough to answer. My space is 12′ x 12′ but I never have enough space. Is there ever enough? No really, my problem is I get disorganized and crazy in my studio as I have so many things going on at a time. It depends on what you have and how you organize things, but I would say for many it is plenty of room. Yes, the floor is insulated, being we live in the mountains and have a long winter the entire little cottage is well insulated. And if you noticed in my post, I only have one wall with no windows.

  6. Pamela,
Thank you for sharing your sweet she-shed with all of us. I love the brightness and light you have. And so eclectic, the best! We were going to move because we don’t have a basement and I am using up a bedroom for my creative space. Moving was extreme so we agreed on replacing our old shed which is barely used except to store a lawn mower and replace it with a new shed. It will be a she-he shed. 4 ft x 12 ft will be partitioned with a wall for his stuff. He golfs, hates lawn work. My question is in the design we will only have 2 walls without windows. Is that enough wall space to store things and have table space to work? Finished space for me is 12×12. Also we are in northeast and I wondered if you had an insulated floor? We will use small heater like yours, ceiling fan, too. Do you get critters? Thanks again! Happy creating.

P.S. We will have a small dormer on the roof with a transom window in it for more light.

  7. Free is always good. Enjoy building your little cottage and creating in it!

I will be building my she shed this summer, probably with the assistance of my boy-men when they have time. I generally build things on my own so just need help putting the walls and roof in place. The only difference I think I will add is I will be using 2×6’s as my son can get them for free and and sheeting as well. I plan on candle making and crafts.

  9. Love this!!! Do the building plans include the cute porch?

I too have what I call my “Serenity Cottage” converted from an original tool shed off my lovely covered outdoor living room (patio). I do not paint but when we left the herb farm I had to make a space for a still room where I mix my essential oil formulas and natural potpourri. It is truly my “She Shed”. I have a small desk where I can write and an antique hired man’s trundle bed for summer naps or lounging. My husband, who was an excellent pen and ink artist, wood carver and self taught handy man for me had already passed so this project was mine alone and not nearly as well done as he would have made it. I do have a nice work bench surrounded by windows that look down the bank to a small stream and lush foliage and have open rafters above to hang my gathering baskets and dried flowers. It is mostly a warm weather retreat but sometimes run a small heater when I craft my Christmas gift potpourri. It was truly my therapy space along with my gardens after I lost my loving husband.

  11. You will love it! Right now I need to do a major organization in mine and it is on the top of my list. I will be sure to share when I do.

  12. This is exactly the size she shed I’ve been looking for. If I ever get to build mine it will be a scrapbooking cottage. I really need my space back inside my home. Wish me luck.

  13. Do you have to heat in winter? What kind do you have if you do..I have a she she’d in progress..rustic..need to finish some sort of paint on walls or stain..and decorate..my plan too is a place to paint etc..excited an inspired with your post!

  14. Thank you, Liz. I am in the middle for revamping my “she-shed”. My art is now taking a new direction and my cottage will reflect that so stay tuned.

  15. Liz Bender says:

I enjoyed reading about your ‘she-shed’! Pamela, you are some talent. I wish I were ‘younger,’ I would give it a try!

  16. You would laugh if you could see the inside right now, it is jammed and needs to be cleared out. It is on my list to get done before snow flies but I have been buried with painting custom orders.

  17. Jennifer in Alaska says:

Absolutely love it – inside and out!

  18. If you made it a bit larger you could easily fit a set of stairs to make the loft more easily accessible for you. I have thought of putting in those retractable stair cases that many use for attic access. I just haven’t gotten around to pricing them.

  19. Lorraine theurer says:

Love you little shed. Would love to have one as a sewing room. Would have
to be a bit larger for the sewing and embroidery machine.
Couldn’t see the loft to clearly. would be perfect to store extra fabrics.
Would I be able to build some tiny steps or does it require a ladder.
I am 75 years old and don’t think I would like the ladder.
    Thanks

  20. Charlene Bryant says:

Thanks Pamela. I’ll go check out that paint color now and see if they still make it!!

    Have a great week.

    Charlene

  21. I would say yes on the bedroom size and the color of the paint is called Moonlight and the paint is by Behr. I am not sure if they make it anymore but the color formula listed is C40-39. I love the yellow too, my house is painted the same yellow and when we need to repaint I am going with the same one. 🙂 Yes you can enlarge it, my husband built it 12 x 12 so know waste in materials since they come in 4 foot widths. I have thought of maybe bumping out on the North side with a cantilevered bay window and some skylights would help with lighting for my painting videos.

  22. Charlene Bryant says:

    Hi Pamela,

I’m viewing your she shed AGAIN! I so love it and the color of it. Do you recall the name of the yellow paint you used on the outside of it? The brand name as well. We have a yellow house with white trim. We’ve lived here for almost four years and the front of our home gets morning sun – we love it. Unfortunately, the front part has faded to white and we will be painting again this fall most likely. I’m not changing our color unless it’s a yellow I know I like!! The color of your she shed reminds me of our home when we first purchased it. Hope all’s going well for you. Also, can the size of the she she be made larger (slightly)? I understand the OUTSIDE measurement is 12′ x 12′, correct? The inside is about the size of an average bedroom – would you agree?

  23. No I don’t have hot water, it is just hooked up to the outside lines for the garden. It is not that far from the house to hooking it up to electricity and water was no big deal. My husband has worked in the building trade so he knew how to do it all.

  24. Was it difficult to get water and electric run to it? Do you have a hot water heater to have hot water as well?

  25. We built this over 10 years ago so it is hard. Location in the US also affects price. This is well insulated, has water and electricity, it was $5000 to build back then for supplies. All labor was our own. I hope this helps. It would, of course, be less to build if you were simply making a shell or shed.

  26. How lovely! Do you have an estimate of the cost to build this? I saw your plans and am very interested, but I wanted to see if you had a price estimate first! Thanks!

  27. The added light is a big help. It is surprising how much difference white paint makes.

  28. Absolutely dreamy cottage art studio – love it.

Like your plans, too – will be perfect for you then.

An artist needs her light! : – )

  29. It is a well loved space by all who see her and I am headed out there now to enjoy a day of painting and creating! I will come by tonight and visit.

  30. I am so jealous of your She-shed and apparently so is everybody else! This was the most loved link up this week at Create – Share – Inspire. Come see tonight at 8pm EST

  31. Auto correct always gets me too but I got a good chuckle out of the hubby comment. 🙂 I know, my little studio she shed is to die for and I am always thankful that my husband is build saavy and more than willing. He spoils me all the time.

  32. Darn auto correct! I’ve been longing……. Not love nagging….. Lol to funny although dear hubby might agree….

  33. Love your space, it’s adorbs! Love nagging to create my own shed space and moving the studio out of my carport, pinning for inspiration!

  34. It is too fun! Everyone needs one.

  35. The armoire is excellent storage it is why I struggle so before removing it, but it shall still me storage for me, just not inside the Cottage. I love that gold framed mirror above the door, it helps to reflect light that comes in from the loft window that is on the opposite wall from it. I think it adds a touch of elegance to the space.

  36. Eeek! Love it! I’ve always wondered what it looks like on the inside!

  37. Your she shed is wonderful and all your own space to play in.
I really like that large gold frame above the door with your painted glass items.
Also the Armour is such good storage

  38. It is inspirational and so relaxing. I especially love going out to it to paint and create in winter, when I can’t be in my garden. With the tin roof rainy days are especially cozy and special, the sound of the rain is very soothing.

  39. Thank you MJ, it is truly a wonderful place to work.

  40. It feels bigger right now with everything out of the way. I am trying to be more judicious in usage of the space. I still have more things that can be taken out and put in the basement or garage but that is for another day. 🙂

  41. Yes, I do have heat. Living in the mountains where we get plenty of snow I must have heat to enjoy my little cottage. I have a radiant heater that attaches to the wall by Envi. It runs 24/7 in the winter. I do need to supplement when I am going to be working so I have a parabolic heater as well. It directs heat right at you so it feels like you are sitting next to a wood stove. In electricity costs it runs me about $35 to $40 a month to heat it, which to me is little cost for great rewards!

  42. WOW! This is so beautiful. I love the soft color combination. What a wonderful place to work. Enjoy it!!

  43. Pamela, I love your little “get-away” cottage. I would love one in my back yard, just to get away by myself in a space I’ve put together just for me. I would want it to be light and bright with a lot of white. And I would plant flowers all around it. I would take my art and photography things there. I’m curious tho’ as to whether your cottage has heat. Here in Michigan it is cold so many months in Fall and Winter and even into Spring, I would think I’d have to have a source of heat of some kind. Anyway, like you say, it is fun to dream about. Thanks for this post. I enjoyed it.

  44. Looks awesome, Pamela! It seems like such an inspirational place to work! Love it!

  45. You make great use of what space you have. I surely thought your cottage was bigger than that. It looks terrific 🙂

  46. I have a wingback chair on my wish list. 🙂

  47. Welcome Theresa. I am so glad you found me. My creative space is one of my most favorite places to be. I am headed there now to work on another painting tutorial, one of my favorite things to do! Glad you stopped by to say Hi.

  48. Charlene Bryant says:

I love it! I just have one item of concern and it’s for your own good and the health of your back, etc.
I think your chair looks very uncomfortable for sitting for long periods of time. This is just an observation of mine…clearly an opinion. Everything is lovely and very inviting and I’d enjoy the space anyway don’t get me wrong. However because you spend hours upon lovely, joyful hours in there painting, I would think about a chair that has more support for your back and comfort. Again, just an observation on my part. Possibly you’re comfy in it and no problems. Enjoy your blog and will be looking forward to reading more this spring.

  49. I love it! Only thing missing is a chair to read by. Bay window sounds perfect.

  50. Hi, Love your creative space. I found you from the SITS / LTB group & challenge. Thought I’d say hi. I’m a new follower. Excited to see all the lovely things you paint from here 😉

  51. You missed the before pictures. 🙂 I am anything but neat and tidy in here the majority of the time.

  52. It is fabulous and worth moaning and sighing over. I never tire of it.

  53. Those blue legs go to a bench that matches my dining room table. I was testing colors to see which I want on both my table and the bench. I need to paint the table top as well but that is a project for summer when I can do it on my back deck. I need to find a local Habitat and see what goodies I can find, I have never been. Sounds like a treasure trove of goodies. 🙂 Here is a link to someone who did a round up of things made with stair pickets. http://too-much-time.com/2015/02/main-ingredient-monday.html
A skylight would be awesome and would help so much with good lighting for painting.

  54. it is great and what is also so wonderful is it is smack in the middle of my gardens so in the summer I can enjoy being close to all my fabulous flowers listening to the birds sing and the crickets chirp.

  55. Lovely place. You are so much neater than I!
Wishing you many happy hours to come in your little nest.

  56. Gorgeous! Makes me sigh and moan in envy and lust! LOL

  57. Love your studio! You did a great job on the fleurs paris cupboard door sign. I always see those door fronts at my local habitat for humanity store. Also couldn’t help notice those pretty little blue legs tucked in the corner. Are you going to make a table? I always see those stair pickets at habitat and always rack by brain trying to figure out how they could be repurposed. Any ideas? Anyway, I hope you get your skylight one day. Great job.

  58. Your “She Shed” is absolutely lovely. What a great place to spend time in.
