Plant yourslef some Old Buckets & a Wine Barrel. Come see a few ways I have planted these up. FlowerPatchFarmhouseOld Buckets & a Wine Barrel

A couple years ago I did a post on my old buckets planter, click here to see that, it shows how I prepare the buckts and tubs to use as containers!
Nothing fancy but it has always been a favorite of mine.
I loved turning these old buckets into a feast for the eyes.
Old Buckets to Beautiful Planter www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.comI have planted them with violas for pretty spring but frost proof loveliness..
Old Buckets and Violas www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.comthen when things heated up and the violas drooped I traded them out for some petunias…
Old Buckets and Petunias www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.comSometimes I added in other things like lobelia and sweet potato vine..

less to water.
So I moved my smaller buckets to a half wine barrel on my back deck and filled them again with petunias
(some were already coming up from seed in the barrel),
lobelia and a sweet potato vine I had over wintered.

DSC_0047I am always on the look out for old galvanized buckets and tubs, I can’t seem to get enough.
This sits on my back deck in full view of my kitchen window and the sliding glass doors of the dining area.
I never tire of this view and when it cools down again, too cool for petunia and lobelia it will again be festooned with violas.
Now to find some old wash tubs, you know the square shaped ones that had a stand.
I did find new ones, you can even get a clothes wringer to go with it.
Probably not a bad idea if we had some kind of disaster where we had no electricity, at least we could have clean clothes.
Other than working in the garden I have been painting away…I will share what I have been painting next time.
Ta ta…Until next time.

  1. These have drainage holes in them, some are natural from the tubs or buckets rusting out and others I put in them with a drill.

Just wondering if you put drainage holes in the tubs or just add some rocks on bottom for drainage? Love the look!

  6. I live in N. California, in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I am at the 4000 foot level and my zone is 7. The secret to my success is my chickens. 🙂 I compost their precious droppings and every Fall I pour it thick on every part of the garden I can. My husband says I am the only person he knows that loves to shovel *#%@.

  7. Your buckets and wine barrel look fantastic together and the plants growing in them look so lush. I have always loved old galvanized buckets and I try to pick them up when ever I can. I am curious about what part of the country you live in? I see quite a few familiar flowers and I am wondering if your climate is similar to ours here in southern California?

  9. Now there’s an idea! I have a strawberry patch that would look great with a stacked tub planter smack dab in the middle of it, filled with more strawberry plants. Now to hunt down more tubs!
