My Fall Garden 2017 What it Really Looks like!

My Fall garden 2017 is a faded shell of gorgeousness. The once abundantly bright blooms have trickled down to a gorgeous few.

Yes, it is the time of year when I must bid adieu to my wonderfully colorful flowers and welcome the brown of dirt and old plants before it turns white with a blanket of snow.  But there are a few flowers that are hanging on giving me a reason to wander the garden. (once the sun comes over the trees and takes the chill off the air)

I am not the only one happy with the Fall roses, this little guy was all over this rose.

I have a few roses still blooming but not for long, we are sure to get a good freeze soon and that will be it.  Time to prune them all back.

Yes, I prune my roses back in Fall.  Here is a post all about that, CLICK HERE to read it.

All of these I have been sharing are David Austin roses.  They do so well for me, the majority of my roses are David Austins.

A flower I have fallen in love with the past two years is Dahlias.  For years I ignored them as I thought the having to dig up and replant each year would be a hassle.

All I can say is “shame on me.”  I have found them so delightful and well worth any effort.

They are especially wonderful in the late Summer and Fall garden when many other flowers are fading away, they keep on going and fill in until hard frost.

I have a few Black Eyed Susans (Rudbeckias) blooming, they have such golden happy faces.

They are a great contrast to the mums that I planted last Fall.  I bought them in pots, used them in my Fall decor then planted them in the ground when they faded for winter.

Fall at the Studio Cottage She ShedThen there is the sweet little surprise pumpkin that came up in my garden.  I don’t know if it would’ve eventually turned orange but the vine died back after the last very cold night so I picked it to add to my little collection of pumpkins for this year.

My Japanese Maples are all putting on their Fall wardrobe of bright colored leaves.  They do add such a flash of much needed color this time of year.

Fall garden 2017,

Many of the trees around us in the neighborhood are just as pretty. I took a few photos and hope to share that soon.

I took a few videos of my gardens with my phone so you can see what they really look like but the sound is awful.  I will share them anyways so you can see what it really looks like, just bear with the lousy audio.

I did get those hydrangeas planted and here they are in their new home.  They need some mulch and hopefully they will like it here and create a lovely flowery hedge in front of my porch.

And that is a wrap for now.  In the next two weeks I will be digging up and storing the dahlias, digging up and dividing some Iris (click her to see how) and other miscellaneous Fall garden chores.

I hope you enjoyed an honest look at my Fall garden 2017 and the highlights that I like to focus on.  The few remaining blooms that linger to the bitter end.

Happy Gardening (putting it to bed for winter)

  1. I like flowers especially roses, because they give me a special feeling of happiness. Your writing is great, I like it very much.

  2. My only critter trouble right now are the bears. I have big paw prints all over my Suburban from them trying to get in but so far they have left everything else alone. The deer have not been an issue the past couple of years I can only assume the neighbors dogs running into the woods regularly keep them at bay but I am not certain. A jack rabbit was visiting my other neighbor daily but he did not seem to bother coming into my garden.

  3. Yes, that is a coleus, and it may have been a shock to it to go from outside to inside. Cut it back some and see if it revives. Give it plenty of light and don’t over water. Watch for spider mites, they are notorious for attacking coleus. Here is my usual method for bringing in plants Overwinter Your Favorite Plants

  4. Yes, I do prune my roses in Fall and I do know how most think it best in late winter or Spring. I don’t know if you had a chance to hop on over to the other articles I wrote on why I do that but it gives a more detailed explanation. Pruning depends on so much more than time of year. But it boils down to I have to prune in late Fall or the snows would just make a mess of my roses by breaking off the canes. We get heavy wet snows.
I am going to do a full length post on digging up my dahlias and what I do before storing and how I store them. That will probably be this coming week.

  5. What a beautiful place to live! And such a variety of plants. Do the deer and other critters bother your plants? Loved listening to the birds in the background! Living among nature has got to be the best. Except for the snow I’d be in heaven!

  6. I am on the watch and it is getting pretty close to time to dig up. I have a few gardening pals that have already done so but I want to make sure I get it right and I have a good place to dry them before storage so that is not an issue. They do not so I can see why they jump the gun so to speak and want to get it out of the way while they have a good place to dry them before tucking them away.

  7. Thank you, Peggy. I do enjoy my garden and mourn a bit when it starts to fade away for winter. But it gives me more time to paint and I enjoy that too, so there is a bright side.

  8. Pamela, you have a very beautiful garden, love the bright colors. The little red leaf plat just above the japanese one. I think Colius not sure. I have a very small plant potted i brought in when we started to get frost at night. but it is not doing very well inside. I have had these before but they were bigger when i got them. What is it that this little one could be lacking. I gets morning sun.
    Thank YOU
    Dot

  9. I love your photos. Clearly your flowers are still around and making you smile. Yay!

I have a few questions…you prune your roses in the fall. I;’m a newbie with a climbing rose that puts up with my ignorance. Many have told me not to prune in the fall as I’ll cut back the stems the need in the spring. Help!

Next. How do you store you dahlia’s over the winter? They are so pretty and I’d love to grow some in an area at our lake house. I agree they are worth the trouble…gorgeous!

    I’d appreciate your help!

  10. Darlene Knott says:

I like the dahlias too! It really isn’t so hard to dig up those bulbs. I need to write myself a reminder on my calendar though! 😀

  11. We have had a few chilly nights but are looking for a freeze later this week, so I’m busy putting my garden to bed. I’m tired of freezing peppers which were the only plants that did well this year. Your flowers have been beautiful! And the dahlias were gorgeous.
